A Balloon For Our Shooting Star

Posted by Julian Gomez on August 28, 2010 in Poetry

The summer I met you,
Was one of the best I ever had.
You were a bright star of understanding
And your beauty blew my mind.
You had the most peculiar way of viewing life,
And I love you for it.
I’m so glad we became friends
And now I can’t imagine that summer without you.
You inspired everyone you met
And now, in your absence, you create beauty through others.
I am thankful that the amazing person I met a year ago
Will be remembered forever.
Balloons of love now rise from everyone you’ve touched,
From the thousands whose hearts you’ve warmed.
It saddens me to let it go,
But I hope the clouds part as it reaches you.
Your time with us was a gift borrowed from above
Thankful for you, we let you return.
You were truly remarkable, Esther,
As a person and a friend.

Fisher of Men

Posted by Julian Gomez on August 19, 2010 in Poetry

Baits the hook
Puts on her shortest dress
Casts the rod
Walks down the street
Lets some line loose
Gives her best smile

She is a fisher of men
Don’t let her lure you in
She’s no amateur
She’ll keep you or use you
She is a fisher of men

Waits for a bite
Makes you want to come nearer
Then you’re hooked
At first you don’t struggle, mesmerized
Now the bait is gone
You know you’re hooked; can feel her reeling in.

She is a fisher of men
She’ll put you back on the hook; now you’re bait
No remorse to the pain in the eyes of her prey
There are plenty of fish in the sea, so it goes
So why did it have to be me?

You fight it, but only barely
Line is shorter and you’re tired
Thrash and pull but it only hurts more
Jump out, dive down, still no remorse
Alas, the dock is in view
She stands proud with her catch at bay

She is a fisher of men
You’re her prize or her bait
Or the one who got away
But that’s not her usual story
Not a tale of a fisher of men

Throws you in a bucket
And casts the line again
Wait for it to end
Except this is only beginning
One place where the victim of the fisher of men
Fear to end up, is under a knife, losing scales

She is a fisher of men
Don’t you forget
Not catch and release
But catch and devour
She is a fisher of men

A Mother’s Love

Posted by Julian Gomez on May 10, 2010 in Poetry

Mom
I didn’t know how else to say it
so I’m putting this in poetry
you’re too extraordinary for a simple Mother’s Day card.

You’re my mother
and in my eyes you’re flawless.
Even if I don’t always show it,
I love you more than anything.

You brought me in to the world
though I know that wasn’t the hardest part.
Then you had to raise me
and I’d say you did a marvelous job.

Everything I accomplish
is thanks to you
and any award I may win
should be in your name.

You guide me through life
with unmatched patience and care.
You inspire me to be better
even if you don’t expect me to be the best.

So thank you a million times over,
for your love, your advice,
your excellent cooking,
and thank you for your friendship.

A mother-son relationship is so complex
and it’s so deeply rooted,
that it’s impossible to articulate
even in verse.

So as not to keep you all day
I’ll leave you with two sets of three words.
I love you.
Happy Mother’s Day.

That One Time With That One Person

Posted by Julian Gomez on December 28, 2009 in Poetry

How can it be?

One person can just make you so happy

It just takes that moment

when you’re both talking,

nothing special,

just saying things that don’t even matter.

But you’re happy,

you’re oh so happy

and you don’t know why

but you’re smiling

you’re grinning from ear to ear

just because they’re near.

You don’t even notice,

but time is passing quickly

and the two of you have much to say yet

when you’re done,

you’ll realize you’re in love

but she won’t be there to hear you say it out loud.

Being Led On A Whim

Posted by Julian Gomez on December 28, 2009 in Poetry

Well, we are all here on this road,

even if the twists and turns

make us all part our different ways

and some of us get lost on our way.

I don’t know the name of this road,

I don’t have a clue why I’m on it

but I know that you’re all here with me

and that makes me feel somewhat better.

The road doesn’t define you, unless you let it.

I’m not that kind of person

Whatever kind of person I may be,

I’m not the kind that lets the road define me.

Sure it matters where you’re going,

but when you get there

will you look back and smile at how far you came,

or will you see the outline of where you began?

I would like to say I took every back street

and that I chose to take paths that lead to forks.

I would take comfort in having done all that,

even if I took a one way street at first.

If it were not for you, my fellow travelers

I highly doubt I would ever get off that one-way street.

I would never take the more risque roads

I would keep to being the safe driver.

I still think you should take precaution

Do not twist your steering wheel from side to side,

or take your seat belt off and close your eyes.

But, get on the streets that have no tire marks.

It is exciting and relieving to charter the unknown

and to map the unmapped.

Your life is America and you,

you are Christopher Columbus.

You might err at first,

but you might discover something new, unaware.

You don’t need a GPS,

Make whim your driving philosophy.

There are those who try to right your wrongs,

who block you off and slow you down.

When you come across them,

just speed up and go around them.

Don’t confuse them with others,

those who point you in their direction.

You were that person to me,

and your finger pointed away from my monorail.

It can be hard to let yourself be guided,

but you don’t have to make their direction

your final destination,

use it as a change of path every now and then.

Everyone can use company,

because if you have no one to share the excitement with,

an unchartered path is pointless.

Thank you for keeping me company on my new road.

Our Own Creation

Posted by Julian Gomez on December 28, 2009 in Poetry

We were so together
I thought you loved me
I thought I loved you.
It’s so very strange
How people drift apart.
From one day to the next
People change so much.

Always moving forward
And never looking back.
But I never saw this coming,
Not with us.

We were perfect;
In young love
But then reality came
And ripped our smiles away.
Because even if you love me
Even if I love you,
We can’t live in a fairy tale
Because this is real
We’re not characters in a novel.

I’m just a fool, I’m not the prince
You’re looking for,
You’re not extraordinary
But don’t you know
That’s just my kind of girl?
So forget reality, forget fairy tales
Because when we’re together
We create something new,
We exist where time and space
Are not relevant,
Where reality ends
And we embrace in ways
That are metaphysical,
Where reality is a nonentity.

Then we drift away
We lose everything we created,
All of it becoming an ever fading memory
Of a time where innocent love thrived
And nothing had to be complicated.
You try to remember what is was like
Living in that split-second
When you knew you were in love
And your fabricated nonreality
Was yet to fall apart.

Sound Waves

Posted by Julian Gomez on December 28, 2009 in Poetry

I feel so lonely
All locked up in this place
They’re yelling
And I’m trying not to listen
But their words slip through
In between my fingers.
Their words pierce my ears
Who knew that
Sounds waves can be painful
When directed at you.
I don’t care if they’re wrong
Especially when they’re not.
Leave me alone.
Leave me to rot.
Should I change just to please them,
So they have nice things to say?
Maybe I’m different,
We’re not all the same.
Let me be me
And I swear I’ll get by.
But what you just said,
I wonder if you heard me after
When I cried in the shower.
The water and tears joined as they fell
Down to my feet then in to the drain
Now I feel ok
I don’t feel so broken.
But soon it’ll happen.
All over again.

With And Without

Posted by Julian Gomez on December 28, 2009 in Poetry

It’s not here nor there
it’s not where we stand.
It isn’t what we say,
nor is it what we do.

When I said I would
I wasn’t speaking to you.
You miss-imagined me,
I’m out of your interpretation.

I don’t want you to follow me
just leave me behind.
There is no need to tell me;
I don’t wish to say goodbye.

Now I’m here
you are not.
Now you’re there
me without.

Don’t try and find
what you shouldn’t want.
I’m here alone
in this paper town.

I left you clues
you searched.
It’s not what I intended;
to be found.

Now you’re here with me
not without.
Now I’m not alone
in this paper town.

Less Than Infinity

Posted by Julian Gomez on August 27, 2009 in Poetry

We never last
not forever,
we all become past
so never say never.

Take her hand
hold her close
join a band
ride a horse

Do what you can
there’s so little time
be a good man
to not is a crime.

Time is so precious
Don’t ever regret
Time is so vicious
It makes us forget

We don’t live for long,
Search for divinity
We don’t live for long,
Less than infinity.

A Pleasant Surprise

Posted by Julian Gomez on August 8, 2009 in Poetry

She took me by surprise
I didn’t see her there
She was wearing a disguise
I was blind and unaware.

These sort of things just happen
You can’t control them and they’re messy
There’s no reason, there’s no pattern
It makes me cautious, makes me queasy.

She makes you question your beliefs
She makes you different, a new style
Gives your life a load of grief,
but in the end, you know she’ll make you smile.

You’re like me, not the same
as those others that we know
When your with me, don’t feel shame,
be yourself, not the status-quo.

You took me by surprise,
turned my world upside down
No more caution, no more lies
No more maybes, no letdowns.
